Fatso FAQ

About Fatso

Find out a little more about us and where we started.

Fatso is a line of all natural nut butters enriched with plant-based super fats. Nut butter is great on its own but we are all looking for efficient yet tasty ways to pack all of our desired health benefits into one tidy spoonful. Fatso uses healthy fats such as coconut oil, avocado oil and MCT oil plus the added fibery goodness of chia and flax to give you a nutrient dense, intensely delicious, and cost conscious nut butter without any sugar or palm oils. It’s nut butter...but way better.

Fatso refers to all of the good fats we put into our nut butters. All that good FAT and SO delicious: FATSO!

Our Founder and CEO, Jill Van Gyn, started her operation out of the back of a health food restaurant in Victoria BC in 2016. All she wanted to do was offer better nut butters to her family and friends. Nut butters were getting extremely pricey but didn’t offer the nutrient diversity she was looking for. Jill took a simple nut, added in plant based fats, chia, flax, and fiber, and made it taste amazing and priced it as competitively as possible. Spoon to spoon, every jar of Fatso contains a nutrient rich nut butter that will consistently give you more bang for your buck. Fatso checks all the boxes: checked all vegan, gluten free, non-GMO, Kosher, keto and no sugar or palm oil ever! Today Fatso can be found in every province across Canada, at Whole Foods in Washington and Oregon and is available in both the US and Canada via Amazon or Shopify.

Fatso uses IMO or isomalto-oligosaccharide, a dietary fiber derived from tapioca.

IMO or isomalto-oligosaccharide is a dietary fiber derived from tapioca and is used as an all-natural sweetener and source of fiber in Fatso. It provides a little bit of sweetness without the caloric punch of sugar and has a low glycemic index.

To date our only ingredient that is organic is our coconut oil. The reasons we have opted to forgo organic ingredients is because it is cost prohibitive. One of our main goals at Fatso is to keep health food as accessibly priced as possible. To make our product wholly organic would price many people out of the market. As such, we have opted to focus on high quality ingredients that are cost-effective resulting in a nutrient dense yet affordable option.

Our peanuts are 100% sourced from the USA with most of the farms located in Alabama.

The natural flavorings component included in our flavors, is a mixture of natural molecules extracted from botanical materials. All of our flavourings are FDA approved essential oils or powders derived from plant botanicals.

No, Fatso products do not contain caffeine.

Nope! There is no added sugar and no palm oil in any of our products.

Fatso doesn’t use any palm oil or emulsifiers to keep it mixed so the oils will separate. We are 100% natural! Just give it a really good stir and pop it in the fridge, if you like it firmer, or the cupboard, if you like it runny.

Packaging, storage & freshness

How to get the most enjoyment from Fatso

Shelf life is 1 year from best before date.

It depends on how you like it! All Fatso products can be kept in the pantry or in the fridge. 3 months or in the fridge depending on if you like it nice and runny (cupboard) or soft and creamy (fridge). Fatso Cocoa should be kept in the cupboard for best consistency as we use real cocoa butter which will harden up in the fridge.

We are very conscious of our use of plastic and are consistently looking for ways to improve our carbon footprint. We are hoping to move to 60-100% post consumer plastic as soon as we are able. Many people ask us to go glass but there are a few reasons we don’t do this: It is extremely expensive, the breakage is costly and wasteful, and the carbon footprint to transport glass jars across North America exceeds that of plastic jars. We are always looking for better, cleaner, and creative ways to offset our carbon footprint and will keep you updated with any developments.

Yes Fatso’s jar is recyclable. We highly suggest that you run it through the dishwasher or clean it out fully in order to give the jar the best possible chance at being fully recycled.

DID YOU KNOW? You Fatso lid fits any conventional mason jar. Great for a Fatso smoothie or overnight oats on the go!
